Assessment Objectives

A-Level Media Studies Assessment Objectives (AO1 – AO4)

AO1
Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of media concepts, contexts and critical debates, using terminology appropriately and with accurate and coherent written expression.

AO2
Apply knowledge and understanding to show how meanings are created when analysing media products and evaluating your own practical work.

AO3
Demonstrate the ability to plan and construct media products using appropriate technical and creative skills.

AO4
Demonstrate the ability to undertake and apply appropriate research.


With Unit G324, you will be assessed using the criteria set out in AO2, AO3 and AO4.

Marking Criteria

Total for Unit G324 is 100 marks.
* Research and planning = 20 marks
* Construction = 60 marks (main task = 40 marks; ancillary task 1 = 10 marks; ancillary task 2 = 10 marks)
* Evaluation = 20 marks

Research and Planning

Research and planning skills to be presented and evidenced…

- Planning and research evidence will be complete and detailed.
- Research into similar products and a potential target audience.
- Organisation of actors, locations, costumes and props.
- Work on shotlists, layouts, drafting, scripting and storyboarding.
- Time management.
- Care in the presentation of the research and planning.
- Skill in the use of digital technology and ICT in the presentation.
- Communication skills.

Level 1 (0 – 7 marks)

Planning and research evidence may be incomplete. There is a minimal level of evidence and / or understanding of the research and planning elements.

Level 2 (8 – 11 marks)

Planning and research evidence may be incomplete. There is a basic level of evidence and / or understanding of the research and planning elements.

Level 3 (12 – 15 marks)

There is a proficient level of evidence and / or understanding of the research and planning elements.

Level 4 (16 – 20 marks)

There is an excellent level of evidence and / or understanding of the research and planning elements.
 Evaluation


Candidates will evaluate their work digitally. Each candidate should give a clear indication of their role in any group evaluation. The questions that must be addressed in the evaluation are:
    In what ways does your media product use, develop or challenge forms and conventions of real media products?
    How does your media product represent particular social groups?
    What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why?
    Who would be the audience for your media product?
    How did you attract/address your audience?
    What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?
    Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?


Level 1 (0 – 7 marks)

The evaluation is possibly incomplete. There is a minimal level of evidence and / or understanding of the evaluative elements.  Minimal skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the evaluation.


Level 2 (8 – 11 marks)

There is a basic level of evidence and / or understanding of the evaluative elements. Basic skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the evaluation.


Level 3 (12 – 15 marks)

There is a proficient level of evidence and / or understanding of the evaluative elements.  Proficient skill in the use of digital technology or ICT in the evaluation. Excellent skill in the use of appropriate digital technology or ICT in the evaluation.
